The original formula Rene Caisse worked with before she ended up with only 4 of the herbs included an herb called Red Clover (Trifolium pratense). This is typically the herb that concerns folks who have hormone driven cancers, however none of the brands we recommend include it.
It’s not the natural estrogens that are the problematic for hormone driven cancer – its the xenoestrogens, the man made estrogens, estrogen mimickers, and endrocrine disruptors. These types of Estrogens get into our body and attach to hormone receptors and cause problems.
We get these man-made xenoestrogens from drinking water (with heavy metals and other toxins), taking birth control, perfumes, cosmetics, metals, tin cans, even some toilet paper. Our bodies then become overloaded in fake estrogens, which can lead to tumors, fibroids, endometriosis, and even cancer.
RED CLOVER IN 8 HERB BLENDS: IS IT A CONCERN?
There is not enough red clover in the 8-herb formula to be a problem at the normal dose of 2oz (even 2oz twice) a day… and there isn’t any red clover in the 4-herb formula at all. It is popular opinion that nurse Rene Caisse developed the 4-herb formula so there would be less, to no, side effects or concerns for the most numbers of people. She didn’t have time to make separate batches for each ailment so she developed what would be the most successful for the majority of people.
After some calculations on the amount of Red Clover that is in the 8-herb blend, you find you would have to take a considerable amount of Essiac daily for the Red Clover to be any problem whatsoever.
Amount of Red Clover in 2oz of Essiac tea…
- Burdock Root 52 parts
- Sheep Sorrel 16 parts
- Slippery Elm Bark 4 parts
- Turkey Rhubarb Root 1 part
- Kelp 2 parts
- Red Clover 1 part
- Blessed Thistle 1 part
- Watercress .4 part Total Parts : 77.4
Now, let’s put that into the amount of herbs used to make (1) 32oz bottle of the decoction (concentrate)
1oz (volume) of herbs makes 1 bottle of Essiac…
- Burdock Root .34 ounces
- Sheep Sorrel .10 ounces
- Slippery Elm Bark .26 ounces
- Turkey Rhubarb Root .06 ounces
- Kelp .13 ounces
- Red Clover .06 ounces
- Blessed Thistle .06 ounces
- Watercress .03 ounces
- Total Ounces : 1.0oz
Okay… so now we have .06 of an ounce of red clover in a pot, and if we assume that all of that ends up in the 32oz bottle of Essiac… we’re going to take just 2 of those ounces out for a single dose… There is now .00375 of an ounce (4/1000 of an ounce) of Red Clover in that dose, not enough to make a difference, and it’s natural estrogen, not a man-made one.
